Training Programs

You are invited to follow the pathway of adult leader development that Baden-Powell began in 1918. The quality of the Scouting program that we bring to the boys is dependent upon the quality and capability of the unit's adult leaders.

The leadership training philosophy of the Boy Scouts of America is to provide adult leaders with fundamental information about the aims and purposes of the movement, as well as specifies about their particular roles in Scouting.

Why should I take training?
A trained leader is knowledgable and confident in the role of being performed. The knowledge and confidence of a trained leader are quickly sensed by Cub, Boy, Varsity or Venture Scouts and are a positive influence on their lives.

The BSA training courses are designed to help any adult get a better idea of the responsibilities of their leadership position. They also help the leader to prepare for the meetings that they will hold with the boys. An adult that takes the time to complete the appropriate training will be better equipped to deliver the kind of program that keeps the boys excited! But, many new leaders get confused when it comes to the available training and deciding which training courses to take and in what order.

To achieve our aims in the Gulf Ridge Council, we will offer training at different times in each District. If you cannot attend training in your local community, please feel free to attend training in another District.

Many different Training Courses are available through the Boy Scouts of America, designed to meet your needs and the needs of your youth. You can view upcoming training events in the Gulf Ridge Council here, or you can go to the Calendar page and select Training from the Category drop down box.

What does it take to be considered "Trained"? Requirements are different for each position. Training Awards are available for each position that you receive training in and and in which you complete tenure and activity requirements.

Youth Protection

Youth safety is the No. 1 concern of the Boy Scouts of America.

To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies, effective June 1, 2010:

  • Youth Protection Training is required for all registered volunteers.
  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training before they submit their application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • .
  • Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection Training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.

Please review these steps to ensure these policies are fully implemented.

The Gulf Ridge Council would like to thank you in advance for your patience as we work alongside our fellow Scouters to make our youth safe. You may encounter delays in bringing your training certifications up to date. This is due to the hundreds of thousands of volunteers across the nation that are accessing the system at the same time. Please allow the system time to process your work and try again if necessary.

You will find a FAQ listing herefor the Youth Protection Updates. Hopefully, this will answer any questions you may have about the recent changes in policy. If you cannot find your answers here, please contact Gulf Ridge Council at (813) 872-2691.
